For example, with 8 Workshops (120 + 8x10), you will have a 200% Research Rate. To add more complexity, these calculations are done on the sum of the total efficiencies of your Workshops. Yep. You'll want as many workshops as you can staff because upgrade speed makes a huge difference in your ability to keep your people alive. Especially in the early game, it doesn't make sense to have engineers cutting wood or gathering coal - they're a lot more valuable for research.
